YouTube overtakes Yahoo in traffic

YouTube is now sitting just behind Google and Facebook as the third most visited website in the world. It knocked Yahoo back to the fourth position yesterday and has been able to keep hold of its new spot for a whole day. Facebook was able to overtake Google for under a day earlier this year so how long will YouTube be stationary?
Social networks are creeping into the top ten list and fast. It’s a result of people being interested in what their social circle and community sites are doing more than searching for information. Twitter is now at the tenth spot, Blogger at eight and Wikipedia is at seven.
Yahoo! has positioned itself as a search portal, offering everything from news to trending topics. Whereas Google, the most visited website, just offers a simple homepage with a search box and button. Is it worth remaining a portal? Ask.co.uk is a simple search engine very similar to Google and according to Alexa, the web information company, only ranks it at 54.
YouTube is constantly experimenting with its data. YouTube Charts was launched on the 18 August and earlier than that it redesigned its ‘browse’ feature.
To get into the top ten it seems you need to be able to build a community around each user. They need to want to return to the website either to take part in existing conversations or start new ones. Yahoo does not offer any of these features.
Additionally once you are on YouTube it is easy to get distracted and waste an hour, or more, on videos of people falling down stairs. Once you’ve found what you’re looking for on Yahoo you leave the site. It’s the problem with search engines. They want to find you the website you’re after in the quickest possible time, but also keep you on the site to make money from advertising and boast about their traffic ranking.
It is worth remembering that Alexa’s ranking system has attacked for being unreliable as it only takes into account people who are using the Alexa Toolbar. As a result I’d argue YouTube has been getting more traffic than Yahoo since it was purchase by Google in 2006. Whenever Google acquires a company it gets massive amounts of press coverage resulting in more traffic going to the site.
I don’t believe YouTube will ever over take Facebook or Google. For now it’s sitting pretty at the number three spot and there’s nothing wrong with bronze.
